Ladera Vineyard's story begins with one family's honored farming traditions and a passion for wine grown from hillside vineyards. Originally Motana cattle ranchers, Proprietors Pat and Anne Stotesbery and their four children relocated to Napa Valley in 1997, and have now been respected wine growers for more than a decade. In 2000, after tackling the art of making fine wine from mountain fruit with a vineyard on Lone Canyon , the Stotesberys acquired a historic per-Prohibition “ghost winery” built in 1886 and 185 acres of Howell Mountain land with 81 acres planted to vines. Keeping their farming roots close to heart, the Stotesberys soon replaced their ranching years with days spent working in the vineyards and restoring the historic winery. Listed in the official book Ghost Wineries of the Napa Valley, the building is no ghost. It's one of the very few such structures that has not only been restored, but also returned to its former glory as a fully functional gravity flow winery!
Ladera's winemaker Karen Culler started her winemaking career as a child, making homemade wine with her father and grandfather in Ohio . Graduating from UC Davis in 1984, she started a 6 month internship at Robert Mondavi Winery in their Research Department. Six months turned into two years and when Robert Mondavi purchased Vichon Winery, Karen moved to Vichon as Assistant Winemaker in 1986. In 1989, she became Winemaker. Vichon gave Karen the opportunity to experience the vineyards of Napa Valley , northern and central-coast California , and the south of France . In 1997, she realized she was most interested in her own backyard, Napa and Sonoma , and started her own label, Culler Wines.
With two Pillow Rd harvests under their belts, Pat and Anne Stotesbery and Karen Culler are pleased to announce the first release of the 2006 Pillow Rd Pinot Noir. Setting out to produce a wine that is elegant and true to the Pinot Noir varietal, the 2006 Pillow Rd Pinot Noir carries fresh strawberry and raspberry aromas with silky tannins and a seamless finish—a true reflection of the finesse and sophistication of California Pinot Noir. Pillow Rd Vineyard consists of two vineyard plots located on both the north and south sides of Pillow Road in Sebastopol . The vineyards are situated on the southern edge of the Russian River Valley , and nearby vineyards are owned by Merry Edwards and Littorai. In total, both vineyards are planted to 22 acres of vines, of which 20 acres are Pinot Noir and two acres are Chardonnay.

Educated Guess 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon - Napa Valley
Wine of the week!!!
Only $19.95!
So ask yourself this question: Have you ever found yourself in a wine shop or restaurant perusing the wines and wondering…how do I choose the best wine for the money? You may admire a label, recognize a name, or recall a great review…in essence you're making an “Educated Guess.” This is exactly what goes on in the vineyards and wineries around the world. Should we pick the grapes now or wait? How long should we barrel age our wine? Should we use French or American Oak, or both?
At The Roots Run Deep winery they use knowledge, intuition, and years of experience to make the best possible decisions; however at the end of the day it still remains an “Educated Guess.” At Roots Run Deep they have done all of the Guesswork for you, and produced the richest, ripest, and most complex Cabernet Sauvignon you can buy for the money. So when you won't settle for less, “Buy Educated Guess.”
Oh, and everyone wants to know about their unique label. The label was designed to tell the story of how you can make an educated guess in winemaking, not to give you nightmares about your high school chemistry class. It shows you actual winemaking formulas that are either induced or naturally occur during a specific winemaking process. So drink up and enjoy!!!
